OUR HISTORY
Just 176,000 square meters are grabbing the attention of wine connoisseurs around the world. Uruguay ranks fourth as a producer in the South American continent and it is the only one with an Atlantic climate influence, which has allowed it to develop balanced wines with unique and internationally recognised characteristics.
The wines here are closer in structure, style, and taste to Old World wines, as Uruguay’s climate is the closest in South America to Bordeaux; it’s humid, at sea level, seasonal and it has limestone soils rich in calcium.
At present, Uruguay is the only producer in the world where there are significant quantities of Tannat in relation to its total area of vineyards - and with a production that exceeds even that of its place of origin, adapting like no other to the local soil and climate. The Tannat surprises with an unknown quality and sophistication for this strain, with mature and soft tannins and a seductive velvety structure.
The wineries are small and still family-owned and run. The wines are virtually all hand-made every step of the way, and infused with the passion and enthusiasm of these families, resulting in unique wines with characteristics that reflect both the terroir of the vineyard and the personality of the individual winemaker.
THESE ARE WINES WITH SOUL THAT CONNECT YOU WITH THE PEOPLE AND THE PLACE BEHIND EACH ONE OF THEM.
Wine making has been going on in Uruguay for well over 250 years when the Spanish brought vines to the region, but it was the French-Basque immigrant, Don Pascual Harriague who brought Tannat vines from its original home in the West Pyrenees of France to Uruguay in the late 1800’s Harriague left the legacy of his cultivation, which gave Uruguay identity as a wine country and that four generations of Uruguayan wine growers have managed to perpetuate.
LOCATION
A privileged geographic location between parallels 30 and 35. Maritime climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and calcareous soils rich in clay.
HAND MADE
More than 50% of the harvest is still done by hand and almost every step of the process for most wines is still hand-made to this day. True craftsman, the wine is infused with the passion and enthusiasm of the family.
PRODUCTION
Small scale, most of the wineries are small, family run businesses.
OLD & NEW WORLD
Combines the best of the European wine tradition with the innovation of the New World.
You won’t find small batch production wines in large bottle shops or chain restaurants and they won’t be running big marketing campaigns.
You’ll discover them in the setting they deserve; at beautiful independent restaurants, in small family-run bottle shops and at home with the family around the dinner table.
