The Vineyards
BODEGA BOUZA
In 2002 Bodega Bouza was established by Juan and Elisa following the restoration of a historic winery first built in 1942 by Numa Pesquera.
Since then the winery has established itself as Uruguay’s most critically acclaimed producer. Grapes are sourced from Bouza’s own five estate vineyards in the Canelones, Maldonado, and Montevideo regions of Uruguay. The 5 hectare Melilla Vineyard surrounds Bodega Bouza, located in the northwest section of Montevideo. The 12 hectare Las Violetas Vineyard is 39 km north of Montevideo in the Violetas subregion of Canelones.
This temperate, Atlantic-influenced climate sees four distinct seasons and temperatures rarely exceed 93 degrees. Each half hectare is vinified on its own before selection for various cuvees. While Bouza is receiving worldwide attention for their Tannat bottlings, the winery is also responsible for some of the most interesting Tempranillo, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Albariño in South America. In general, these wines age in barrels, with the exception of the Unoaked Tannat, which is made only those years in which the harvest is exceptional.
Wines: Albariño, Chardonnay, Semillón, Pinot Noir (rosé), Tempranillo (rosé), Merlot, Merlot Tannat, Tempranillo, Tannat, Unoaked Tannat, Tannat.
CERRO DEL TORO
The Kambara family planted the first vines in 2016, located on the northeastern face of the Cerro del Toro in an 800-hectare estate in Piriápolis. The first vines were planted with local vine cuttings and a small selection of imported vines. Two thirds of the vines are red varieties (Tannat, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Gamaret and Lacryma Christi) and a third of the plantings are white vines, including mainly Albariño -which has already become a hallmark of the winery-, Chardonnay, Viognier and Pinot Grigio.
Since 2022, Cerro del Toro is Sustainable Certified, being one of the few in Uruguay to certify not just the vineyard but also all the chain of custody of the wine process until is bottled and stored.
